Home Safety Checklist 

Use this checklist to make sure your home is poison safe for your family.  The poison dangers of each room are listed.  As you go through your home, check off those items that have been completed.

Kitchen

__ Remove household products, such as cleaning products, dishwashing compounds
and drain cleaners, from under the sink.
__ No medicines on counters or in open areas.
__ All household products and medications out of reach and out of sight.
__ Child safety latches on all drawers or cabinets containing harmful products.
__ No toxic products stored with food or in food containers.

Bathroom

__ All medications, cosmetics, hair care products, toothpaste, mouthwash and cleaners
out of reach.
__ Medicine storage area cleaned out regularly, old medicines flushed down the toilet.
__ All medications in original, child-resistant containers.

Bedroom

__ No medicines in or on dresser or bedside table.
__ All cologne, aftershave, cosmetics, and powders out of reach.

Laundry Area

__ All bleaches, soaps, detergents, fabric softeners, and sprays out of reach.
__ All products in their original container.

Garage/Basement

__ Insect sprays and lawn care products in locked area.
__ Gasoline and car care products in secured area or locked trunk.
__ Paint, paint cleaners and other home care products in locked area.
__ All products in their original containers.

General Household

__ Storage area for medication and other products is a locked cabinet located up high.
__ Plants identified and out of reach.
__ Alcoholic beverages out of reach.
__ Ashtrays empty and out of reach.
__ Paint in good condition - no chipping or peeling.
__ No mouse baits in areas where children play.

In Case of a Poisoning

__ Have the Poison Help phone number available for use 1-800-222-1222
__ Do older children know how to use the 911 system?
__ If an accident happens, can adults in the family be easily reached?
